Kerala Engulfed by Vigorous Pre-Monsoon Showers, IMD Anticipates Imminent Onset of Southwest Monsoon – Prognosis Detailed

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has prognosticated that the advent of the Southwest Monsoon over Kerala and its ensuing diffusion into select Northeastern territories is increasingly probable within the ensuing three to four days. As of May 28, 2024, the Southwest Monsoon has permeated previously uncharted expanses of the Southern Arabian Sea and the Maldives.

In the forthcoming three or four days, the IMD foresees that the auspicious meteorological conditions will persist, facilitating the continued advancement of the Southwest Monsoon into additional regions of the Southern Arabian Sea, the residual sectors of the Maldives and the Comorin area, certain precincts of the Lakshadweep domain, Kerala, supplementary zones of the Southwestern and Central Bay of Bengal, the Northeastern Bay of Bengal, and portions of the Northeastern states.

IMD Predicts Surplus Rainfall Across India

According to IMD projections, during the monsoon interval from June to September 2024, precipitation surpassing the norm is anticipated across the nation. Central India and the Southern Peninsular India are expected to receive rainfall exceeding 106% of the Long Period Average (LPA), while Northwestern India is projected to experience average rainfall oscillating between 92-108% of LPA. In contrast, Northeastern India is likely to confront subnormal rainfall, descending below 94% of LPA.

Torrential Rains Lash Kerala

Per the latest bulletin from the Indian Meteorological Department, moderate precipitation is forecasted for Tuesday, accompanied by thunderstorms and blustery winds reaching up to 40 kmph in several districts, including Kozhikode and Ernakulam. Additionally, districts such as Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Thrissur, and Malappuram are anticipated to experience moderate rainfall. Conversely, districts like Kannur and Palakkad are expected to encounter sporadic, light showers.

On Tuesday, May 28, Kerala’s meteorological milieu was characterized by robust winds and substantial rainfall, severely disrupting quotidian activities. Numerous principal thoroughfares and narrow byways in Kochi and adjacent areas were inundated due to relentless rainfall commencing early morning. In various sectors of the port city, deluged streets rendered egress challenging for inhabitants, resulting in lethargic traffic on highways.

The incessant downpour also precipitated significant waterlogging, adversely impacting everyday life in the Kakkanad-Infopark and Aluva-Edappally regions. Since Monday night, the Thiruvananthapuram district has witnessed copious rainfall across both urban and rural locales.
