Karnataka ‘sex abuse’ case: SIT detains four people in connection with woman kidnapping case

The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) designated with investigating the purported instances of sexual misconduct implicating Hassan JD(S) Member of Parliament Prajwal Revanna has apprehended four additional individuals in relation to the abduction of a woman, as reported by PTI, citing sources within the SIU. The SIU, constituted by the Congress administration, previously apprehended Prajwal’s progenitor and Holenarasipura Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) H D Revanna, scion of former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda, presently under judicial detainment at Parappana Agrahara Central Jail. An associate of HD Revanna, Sathish Babanna, has likewise been apprehended in connection with the abduction incident and is currently in police custody. The four captives were detained to determine their involvement in the incident, according to law enforcement officials. All are residents of Krishnaraja Nagara in Mysuru. Karnataka’s Home Minister G Parameshwara declared on Wednesday that a third individual had been apprehended, refraining from divulging their identity due to ongoing investigative procedures. Revanna and Babanna were arrested on charges of abducting a woman, a mother of three, from her domicile and illegally confining her, as per police sources. The woman has since been liberated. Police intervention ensued following a complaint by the victim woman’s 20-year-old son, who alleged that his mother was featured in a substantial compilation of explicit videos recently disclosed. These videos purportedly depicted women subjected to sexual assault and molestation by Prajwal. Meanwhile, JD(S) luminary H D Kumaraswamy took a swipe at the state-administered SIU, asserting that it is “straying from its course.” He added that the party intends to submit a memorandum to Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot concerning the matter. The former Chief Minister of Karnataka, while affirming his desire for the culpable parties to be duly penalized, raised queries regarding the investigation. Addressing journalists, Kumaraswamy queried why the woman has yet to be presented before the court. “How many days have elapsed since the abducted woman was brought here? Has her statement been recorded pursuant to section 164 of CrPC (statements recorded by magistrate)? Has she been presented before the magistrate? It has been five days, why has the woman not been brought before the magistrate? From where was she transported? Was the ‘mahazar’ conducted? Was she transported from some countryside dwelling as asserted and reported in the media?” Kumaraswamy inquired. Kumaraswamy also voiced skepticism regarding the SIU’s intentions, intimating that the inquiry might be protracted to further political agendas. He further criticized the delay in presenting evidence to the court and speculated on the resolution of the issue following the announcement of the Lok Sabha election results on June 4. A judicial court on Wednesday remanded HD Revanna to judicial custody until May 14.
