New Delhi: An Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, Jitendra Rawat, died by suicide on Friday morning in Delhi’s Chanakyapuri area. According to police sources, he jumped from the roof of his government-allotted residence in a colony designated for External Affairs Ministry officers at around 6 am.
The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed the tragic incident and requested privacy for the family. “An officer of the Ministry of External Affairs passed away on the morning of March 7 in New Delhi. The Ministry is providing all possible assistance to the family and is in touch with Delhi Police,” the statement read. “The ministry stands with the family in this difficult time. Further details will not be disclosed out of respect for the family’s privacy.”
Sources revealed that Mr. Rawat had been battling depression and was undergoing treatment. He lived on the first floor of his residence with his mother. His wife and two children reside in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. His mother was present at home at the time of the incident.
Police sources informed PTI that Mr. Rawat was between 35 and 40 years old. Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.
