Twitter, now X, also has Stories now, here’s how they are different from Instagram, WhatsApp

Twitter is set to incorporate Grok AI, an AI chatbot developed by Elon Musk, into its Explore section to provide concise summaries of trending stories tailored to individual users. Following the unveiling of Instagram’s new ‘Reveal’ feature, Twitter is also poised to integrate AI into its platform with the introduction of ‘Stories.’

Announced on Friday, Premium subscribers of X will have the privilege of accessing summarized posts related to each trending story featured on the For You tab within Explore. This revelation comes from an official announcement and accompanying screenshots shared by the X Engineering team.

On May 4th, an announcement from X Engineering via Twitter stated, “Now available: Stories on X, powered by Grok AI. Discover the current global discussions with Stories on X, curated by @grok. Available now for Premium subscribers in the Explore tab! Web and iOS only for now – share your feedback with us.”

With the integration of Grok AI, Twitter aims to supplement its daily trends with additional information and highlight a representative tweet to offer further context. However, the rollout of Twitter’s new feature has been inconsistent, with some trends receiving detailed summaries while others do not. It is anticipated that Grok’s ‘Stories’ will provide summaries for all top news items featured on the For You page.

What sets Grok AI apart?

Critics contend that the concept of ‘news summarization’ is not novel, citing previous instances of news publishers collaborating with AI providers, such as OpenAI’s recent partnership with the FT. Furthermore, other news outlets, including Axel Springer, the AP, and Le Monde, have announced similar initiatives to that of Twitter.

However, what distinguishes Twitter’s partnership with Grok AI? The inclusion of xAI’s chatbot Grok has the potential to incentivize users to subscribe to premium services. Premium and top-tier Premium+ subscribers will gain access to Grok by tapping on the central button at the bottom of the app. Described as a snarky and “rebellious” AI, Grok’s unique selling point compared to other AI chatbots like ChatGPT lies in its exclusive and real-time access to X data, as highlighted by TechCrunch.
