Despite speculation placing the unveiling at I/O 2024 next week, Google has opted for an early announcement, with sales commencing on May 14. This deviation from expectation is perhaps the sole surprising aspect amidst a cascade of pre-revealed details. The Pixel 8a, as unveiled today, aligns precisely with the leaked information, encompassing everything from color choices to core display attributes, processor specifications, and the commitment to long-term software support.

Google affirms that the Pixel 8a boasts “numerous AI capabilities” akin to its higher-tier counterparts, encompassing camera functionalities such as the magical editor, optimal capture, and audio enhancement. Notably, the camera configuration mirrors that of the Pixel 7a, retaining a dual-camera arrangement on the rear, featuring a 64-megapixel primary sensor alongside a 13-megapixel ultrawide lens. Similarly, the front-facing camera maintains its 13-megapixel capacity.
Leveraging the Tensor G3 also facilitates Google’s provision of up to seven years of software support for its most economical Pixel offering. This encompasses both security patches and Android OS updates, mirroring the support extended to the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro.
Moreover, the Pixel 8a boasts a 6.1-inch “Actual” OLED display, boasting a 1080p resolution and a swift 120Hz refresh rate. Google asserts that the panel achieves brightness levels exceeding 2,000 nits (1,400 nits under HDR conditions), while also benefiting from Corning Gorilla 3 protection. It will be outfitted with 8GB of LPDDR5x RAM and will be available in configurations offering either 128GB or 256GB of UFS3.1 storage. Powering the device is a 4,492mAh battery, with support for Qi wireless charging (wired charging capped at 18W).
